The 2017 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is tonight, and as it has become an annual ritual, I make my predictions on the day of the ceremony.

Last year was not super exciting, there weren’t that many smash hits and none of the nominees stood out for having many smash hits. So I am guessing it would be down to star power this year when it comes to winners, more than for smash hits!!!

Therefore this year I may for the first time ever slip beyond the annual 75-90% accuracy in my predictions. But here it goes!!!

Artiste of the Year

Medikal stood out a newcomer with many songs that were popular but I wont say they were smash hits, and although Joe Mettle excelled on many levels I feel his popularity didn’t cut across. So I will narrow this to a battle of big names EL, Sarkodie and Stonebwoy. And I have a feeling Sarkodie could win this for record number!

Most Popular Song of the Year

Hmm, this tough one! For popularity songs like Solo by Aricle Wan, and Alhaji by VVIP featuring Patoranking did well but I think will be down to popularity, artist buzz and star power since it is 100 percent voting. So I will narrow it down to

U x Me by Joey B, R N by Sarkodie, Kaabuame by EL and Sweetie Pie by Kofi Kinaata. I will further narrow it down to Joey B and Kofi- Kinaata. But I think Kofi Kinaata will win this!

Album of the Year

I must admit I haven’t listened fully to any of the albums this year. But I will narrow it to Counselor by Nacee, Bar by EL, Nowhere Cool by M.anifest and Sounds of Africa             by Sonnie Badu. Based on popular songs it may be a race between Nacee and EL. But I think E.L may steal this one!

Best Collaboration of the Year

I will narrow this to Alhaji by VVIP ft. Patoranking, Yewo Nyame a Yewo Adze by Nacee ft. Ernest Opoku, Confirm Rmx by Medikal Ft. Sarkodie, and Nwansina by Ras Kuuku ft. Luther. But I feel Medikal together with Sarkodie have enough buzz to steal this one!

African Artiste of the Year

Tough category this year! Patoranking and Mr. Eazi are my favourites personally. But I think it would be a race between Runtown and Tekno. I think the current buzz for Runtown will let him pick this one!

Best New Artiste/Discovery of the Year

I think Medikal has this one

Best Rapper of the Year

Well I’m not a crazy rap head but I think my top 5 for the category will be

Flowking Stone, EL, Medikal, M.anifest and Sarkodie. Although Medikal made a lot of buzz he may not match up to the clout of the seniors. I have a feeling Sarkodie will bully his way through and win this!

Best Group of the Year

I will narrow it to VVIP, R2Bees and Gallaxy. Since R2bees members have been doing more of solo projects in the recent times I think that may affect them on this one. VVIP may steal this one

Hiplife/Hiphop Artiste of the Year

It is getting confusing each year for me as to what is the difference between best rapper or best hiphop artist/ best hiplife artist…are they again to be judged based on their rap? Whoever wins Best Rapper will not win this, so since I chose Sarkodie for best rapper I think this will be between M.anifest, Joey B and EL. And EL may win this.

Best Male Vocalist

I will narrow this to Afriyie for Here to stay, Joe Mettle for Onwanwani, Akwaboah                                         for Hello and Sonnie Badu for Still You Reign. I have a feeling Joe Mettle will win this.

Best Female Vocalist

I will narrow this to Adina for Too Late, Becca for Beshiwo and MzVee for Nobody Else. I feel Becca might beat Adina for this!

Record of the Year

I will narrow this to Me ne woa by Nacee, Hello by Akwaboah ft. Sarkodie, Too Late                                 by Adina, U x Me by Joey B and Motromodwo by Trigmatic ft. A.I. Although Motromodwo is a special song for me, I think Joey B could win this.

Best Music Video of the Year

I will narrow this to Wiyaala, Okyeame Kwame, Manifest and Edem. I love the visuals in Edem’s Nyedzilo   but I have a feeling the storytelling beauty of Okyeame Kwame’s ‘Small Small’ will win this for him.

Songwriter of the Year

My persona favourite is ‘Confessions’ by Kofi Kinaata but I have I feeling the gospel soldiers, Joe Mettle and Nacee will give him a good run for his money. If I have to make an prediction I’d say Kofi Kinaata.

Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year

I think I will narrow it to Stonebwoy, Ras Kuuku and Ebony. I think this year the two reggae/dancehall categories will be split between Stonebwoy and Ras Kuuku. Stonebwoy might win this.

Highlife Artiste of the Year

It is though 3-way race between Bisa Kdei, Becca and Kofi Kinaata. I think this year would belong to Kofi Kinaata.

Gospel Artiste of the Year

I will narrow it between Joe Mettle, Sonnie Badu and Nacee. This year I think the buzz around Joe Mettle is strong enough for him to steal it from Nacee.

Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year

Since I gave the reggae/dancehall artist category to Stonebwoy, I think Ras Kuuku will take this for Nwansina–Ft. Luther. I’m expecting that split this year.

Hiphop Song of the Year

I want GodMC by M.anifest to win!

Afropop Song of the Year

My top 4 are Dance for Me by Eugy ft. Eazi, Solo by Article Wan, U x Me by Joey B and Grind by Vision DJ ft. A.I. This was the only nomination for Grind and I want that song to win an award but I have a feeling this will go to Joey B.

Hiplife Song of the Year

It is getting increasingly difficult to tell what is hiplife or hiphop over the years. Anyway I think this year Guru will end his jinx by winning this for his song Samba

Highlife Song of the Year

I think Kofi Kinaata will beat Bisa with his song confession.

Gospel Song of the Year

Surprisingly no song by Joe Mettle was nominated so I think it will be narrowed down to Yewo Nyame a Yewo adze by Nacee ft. Ernest Opoku, Change Over by Mary Agyemang and Agye Won Nsam by Piesie Esther. I didn’t follow gospel trends much last year but I feel Mary Agyeman will win this.
