With the 2017 edition of the Stanbic Jazz Festival mere weeks away, the question on the lips of music lovers is which local act makes the grade this time.
There will share the stage with American Jazz legend Gerald Albright and Camerounian born sensation Richard Bona who will be supported by the returning Tom Braxton on sax for the biggest jazz concert in the year.
Indeed, just as with the previous editions, there is a huge representation of Ghanaian acts to truly make the event as thoroughly ‘glocal’ as possible where the local icons can rub shoulders with global giants on the same stage
Steve Bedi is another member of the 15-strong Ghanaian contingent and he is on with more saxxy tunes just as Knii Lantey would be on stage to weave melodies of great pleasure.
Bernard Ayisah and Victor Deh are also back and this being one of the first shows that Victor is playing since the release of his album Makola, who knows what is up his sleeves? Make a date with him to find out.
The gender barometer is fully tested with two dynamic performers Adomaa and Stephanie Benson. The two were on another level last year and promise to raise the bar even higher.
At least two new acts are on the bill; Riffs and Licks, a batch of professionals who are hijacking the jazz scene with their tricks on the beat and Paa Kow, a drummer with traits echoing the great Okyerema Asante.
For a musical journey that has been charming jazz lovers for the past three years, the platform will ,undoubtedly, see the best in the genre the country can boast of. This year has the festival theme “Sax and Strings on Cruise” and patron should be ready a ride of a lifetime.
To Alhassan Andani, Chief Executive of Stanbic Bank Ghana, Jazz music, with its long history in Ghana, is loved by many people in the country and the Stanbic Jazz Festival provides a platform for both local and global icons to meet and musically interact with one another.
“We are a local bank with global links and we believe that getting the chance to play with legends will make for the cross fusion of ideas between our indigenous and foreign artists to make them greater acts, thereby enhancing the glocal nature of the event,” he said.
The festival is in aid of the fight against malaria and part of the ticket proceeds would be used to support the Infanta Foundation in its activities. — GB
