In this era where the majority of millennials – both local and international – prefer to lean towards the path of feminism, most people will agree that the popular saying “what a man can do a woman can do better” has graduated from the level of an adage to become a global anthem that is sang even by the ignorant.
The evolution of the Ghanaian Movie industry gave women the opportunity to give their male counterparts a run for their money. It has opened doors for women to prove that they can also be excellent movie producers and directors just as their male colleagues.
Being a witness to this evolution, made my heart swelled up with joy when I heard of or watched great movies that were produced or directed by the likes of Shirley Frimpong Manso, Yvonne Nelson, Salma Munim and a few others. This pumped up my hopes of the female producers in the movie industry and gave me something to look forward to in subsequent years to come. To my disappointment, it seems to be slowly becoming an event short lived.
In my opinion, 2015 and 2016 were the years of impressive movie producing and directing for women, but 2017 on the other hand has not seen any blockbusters coming from the camp of the females in the Ghanaian Movie industry. Their male counterparts however, have taken the lead and shaken the Ghanaian Movie Industry with groundbreaking back to back blockbusters this year, leaving the heights attained by the females, to be nothing but myths.
Doubt me? Allow me to bless you with some proof.
February 2017, was the Kobi Rana month! We saw this sensational movie producer release and premiere the movie “I love you but” at the Silverbird Cinema. The movie pulled up a crowd that was able to fill up all five (5) halls at the Accra mall Silverbird cinemas. To my very surprise this movie showcased another side to this fantastic producer as his cast and production team were “on point”. Kobi Rana picked no greater time to sell this story than a day for lovers.
In March, Peter Sedufia also the produced the movie “Keteke” that took not only Ghana by storm and broke box office records. Aside from the breathtaking cinematography in the Keteke movie, it also showcased additional creativity with the amount of work put into its production and post-production. All this brought the movie together nicely to create a spectacle of wonder and excitement that was enjoyed by people of all ages.
Kofi Asamoah has been a cinema favorite from “Kalybos in China” to “Amakye and Dede” so it was no surprise when he took over Ghana one more time with the premiere of “John and John” which shattered the box office. Even with all with all the controversies surrounding this movie, no one can deny or argue against the phenomenal acting from the likes of Nigerian movie veteran Chief Pete Edochie and the A list Ghanaian actors led by Kalybos and Ahuofe Patri.
With the above examples it cannot be denied that these men are moving the Ghanaian movie industry forward.
My question is where are the ladies in the Ghanaian movie industry?
Is there anything we should be expecting from these ladies this year?
My consolation is that the year isn’t over yet so I am patiently waiting, hoping and expectant …
