Late comedic actor, Ebenezer Donkor, popularly known as Katawere or Agya Afari was laid to rest over the weekend.

He was buried at Akyem Takorase, near Kade, in the Eastern Region. Some known faces spotted at the funeral to bid the late actor farewell were Grace Omaboe (Maame Dokono),  Amankwa Ampofo, Adwoa Smart among others. The late actor was 78.

Also present was Prince Yawson, popularly known as ‘Waakye, who told Presspeep.com was rushed to hospital over a mild heart failure by a coconut seller.

Narrating his sad fate, he said, “On Friday, 3rd March, I had a long sleep in the evening so in the night, it was difficult for me to sleep. I got up from the bed and all of a sudden, I started sweating profusely. My heart begun panting faster. I felt weak all of a sudden. I felt like easing myself and did so but still, I was not feeling ok.

“It occurred to me to rush out and take coconut water. Though I was wearing only trousers (bare chest and foot), I rushed out, bought a coconut and drunk the water but the situation got worse. I felt like sleeping and so lay on the vendor’s sack containing the bulk of coconuts he sells.

‘Still, I was not getting ok. I became weaker and helpless – so I finally had to lay on the pavement of the street. That was when my heart began throbbing like never before. At that point everything was becoming dark. I was dying slowly. All I could hear was the voice of the vendor saying I should be sent to the hospital.”

The next place he saw himself was the Trust Hospital in Osu where a drug was to be administered on him but he gave the doctors tough time – as he kept screaming loudly in the ward. He continued that, “they (Trust Hospital) referred me to 37 hospital on Sunday.

“It was at 37 hospital that the doctors explained to me that it was a mild heart attack – blood was not flowing through one valve of my heart. They mentioned a technical name for it but I can’t recollect. They too claim they may have to refer me to Korle–Bu hospital if my situation does not get better with time.”

Checks by Presspeep.com at Trust hospital indicates that ‘Waakye owes them GHC 3, 009 for the treatment they gave him. When questioned, he heaved a deep sigh and diplomatically answered: “It’s not easy but I will try my best and pay. I least expected this will come upon me this time. I don’t drink and I don’t smoke. I’ve never taken alcohol before. Hmm”

He also intimated that a number of drugs have been prescribed for him to buy which he hopes to get and also envisages more bills coming up if he is finally referred to Korle-Bu – since his health is not getting better faster as he wish.

A native of both Ekumfi Otuam where his mother hails from and Winneba, Waakye shot into fame during the popular TV Drama series “Obra”. Then the face of TV comedy, he later starred in movies like Ogboo and Man Woman. He has also featured in most of Harry Laud’s productions and series like Jagger Pee series and the Living Arts Show.

Surprisingly, he practiced journalism for a while where he served as the regional correspondent and Marketing Officer for Kumasi based radio station Kess FM. Waakye has over 20 years of experience in acting. He’s also a director and scriptwriter. He’s divorced with two children.
