Finally, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been sworn in as the president of Ghana, and like previous inaugurations, Ghanaians have had a lot to talk about all day. Here are some of the fun highlights from the events surrounding the inauguration.

The 11 power quotes

5. The change we have voted for has to start with each individual. I ask you to be responsible citizens.

6. It is time to define what being a Ghanaian ought to mean. Being a Ghanaian must mean you sign up to a definable code of conduct.

7. I shall protect the public purse by insisting on value for money in all transactions.

8. I see exciting times ahead, the rule of law will be the underlining tenet of our governance.

9. We should learn and accept that we do not own the land, but hold in trust for future generations.

10. State coffers are not the spoils for victorious political parties. I promise to protect the public purse.

11. After 60 years of independence, we no longer have any excuse for being poor.

The viral cough

Nana Addo’s inauguration speech grabbed the attention of Ghanaians and indeed the world. And well so did the unmissable coughing that interrupted his speech.  It appeared the President needed some water to drink while delivering his long speech but there wasn’t any available, resulting in his intermittent coughing and apologies for coughing.

The coughing went viral social media, spiraling into a #CoughChallenge

George Bush’s missing quotes

Nana Addo’s speech has been cited for lifting portions of a previous speech by former American president, George Walker Bush.  Several NDC supporters and members have mocked Nana Addo on social media accusing him of plagiarizing Bush’s speech.

The Director Of Communications at the Presidency, Mr. Eugene Arhin has apologized for what he calls a complete oversight in the inaugural speech of President Akuffo-Addo.

“My attention has been drawn to references being made to a statement in the speech delivered by the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, at his swearing in on Saturday, January 7, 2017, which was not duly acknowledged.

I unreservedly apologise for the non-acknowledgement of this quote to the original author. It was a complete oversight, and never deliberate. It is insightful to note that in the same speech were quotes from J.B Danquah, Dr. K.A. Busia, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and the Bible which were all duly attributed and acknowledged.”NPP explains plagiarism in Nana Addo's speech

Meanwhile a little more eduction from online suggests that even President Bush does not have any rights to claim on the quotes. The phrase or sentence came from Christian Lindke and even before he published his book “Citizens, Not Spectators, A Democracy in Action Civic Education Curriculum for High School Students” which had that re-phrase sentence “…I ask you to be citizens: Citizens, not spectators; citizens, not subjects; responsible citizens building communities of service and a nation of character…”, it was made known by Wilson Woodrow the 28th President of the US (1913 to 1921), in a book by By John Milton Cooper, Jr Who made it known in Biography of the American President, Published by Knopf Doubleday.
