No matter how famous you are, the world struggles with unique, beautiful names; something Lupita Nyong’o, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Idina Menzel and Gabourey Sidibe know well.
But “Orange Is The New Black” starlette Uzoamaka Aduba made a conscious decision to cave to pressure of changing her name to something more convenient for Hollywood.
Nigerian Hollywood actress, Uzo Aduba who spoke at Glamour x The Girl Project rally for girls, brought down the house with her story of how she came to own up her name ‘Uzoamaka’.
Uzo Aduba said she told her mother to stop calling her “Uzoamaka’ but call her ‘Zoe’ instead because no one could pronounce her Nigerian name.
Her mother who was surprised by this plea, told her that if people could pronounce foreign names like Michelangelo, Tchaikovsky and Dostoevsky, they should also learn to pronounce her name.
