In a solidarity statement released through the West and Central Africa Regional Office (WCARO) in Dakar, Senegal and signed by Mrs. Comfort Lamptey who is currently the UN Women Regional Policy Adviser on Governance, Peace and Security in the region, UN Women lauded the YAWC initiative as timely and important. It added that YAWC stands in line with the United Nations’ dedication to realizing gender equality and women’s full participation in leadership.
As part of its participation, UN Women will be represented at the congress by Mrs. Comfort Lamptey and will deliver a keynote address on “Assessing Women in Development; Post Beijing Conference in Retrospect”.
The Young African Women Congress (YAWC) is an initiative of the gender desk of the Excellent Leadership Group (ExLA Group) aimed at complementing efforts to attain SDG Goal 5. It will bring together 450 delegates across Africa who will be guided by 40 accomplished women leaders from Africa and Latin America through presentations, plenaries, group discussions, career fair, cultural displays and a tour.
