‘A United Kingdom’ has strong African presence as some of the biggest known faces in South African film and television also feature in it. They include Terry Pheto, Vusi Kunene and Abena Ayivor.
The dramatic biopic follows the love story of Seretse Khama (Oyelowo), a member of the Botswana royal family, who shocked the world when he married white British bank clerk Ruth Williams (Pike) in 1948 — at a time when interracial marriage was illegal.
Kunene plays Seretse’s uncle Tshekedi Khama, while former Generations actress Ayivor slips into character as his wife Ella Khama. Pheto portrays Seretse’s sister Naledi Khama
The film will open the prestigious 60th BFI London Film Festival in October and is scheduled to hit cinemas on 25 November.
