It’s come to be expected that once a woman gets married, she automatically takes her husband’s last name. Society generally frowns at women who keep their last names after marriage, but what happens if the reverse is the case? I mean what is good for the goose is good for the gander, no?
The brilliant responses under a tweet asking what it means for a woman when her husband decides to keep his own surname paints a hilarious picture of the double standards our society has forced us to live by.

TODAY’S DEBATE: What does it mean for a woman when her husband keeps his own surname?

If my husband had not taken my surname i would have been insulted frankly. How would have my familial line continued? It is all about continuing the Matriarchy.

I find it disrespectful, he is joining MY FAMILY who he doesn’t know from a can of paint, and so naturally should be HONORED to drop his own name to take ours. Afterall, the sacrifice of coming together as a unit, means he changes himself, while I stay exactly the same.

Men shouldn’t be allowed to keep their first name either, it encourages self-confidence, give your husband a cute nickname, like “prince” or “cuddles” to make him feel owned and prevent silly ideas.

To avoid confusion he needs to take my name. We are a unit and a family, love makes one do things for the other. It’s real love if he takes my name. I won’t like it if he’s the only one with a different name in the family.

If he keeps his own surname he clearly doesn’t think much of the ‘honour’ part of his marriage vows – or is a bit pretentious and wants his kids to have a double-barrelled surname.

It means I’ll be more careful in my choice of Husband 2.

It’ll only confuse the kids.
