Don’t go to Twitter.

That’s one of the best advice anyone can give you right now. And if you end up not listening to wise counsel and you head there – then make sure to avoid Nigerian Twitter when men and women are daily doing all they can to kill each other.

Feminism, mansplaining, gender biases, and everything else. It’s tiring; and dangerous. And it’s better not to take sides. But do not be fooled- these human species still get together under and above the sheets, and they have more in common than they’re willing to admit.

Let us show you a few.

1. Respect for tradition
Despite their differences, Nigerian men and women share a deep-rooted respect for cultural traditions. While it might not always seem so, especially with the ill-mannered tweets on X, both genders value the importance of showing reverence to elders, honouring family customs, and maintaining cultural practices that have been passed down through generations.

2. Emphasis on loyalty
Loyalty is a trait highly valued by both Nigerian men and women. In relationships, faithfulness is considered paramount, with both genders expressing a strong aversion to infidelity. This shared value forms a cornerstone of many Nigerian partnerships.

3. Appreciation for good hygiene
Cleanliness is a quality that both Nigerian men and women hold in high regard, right next to godliness. Both genders place importance on personal grooming and maintaining a presentable appearance, recognising that good hygiene is essential for attractiveness and overall well-being.

4. Desire for financial stability
Nigerian men and women alike prioritise financial independence and stability. Both genders appreciate partners who are resourceful and capable of contributing to the household’s economic well-being, reflecting a shared value for financial security.

5. Love for Luxury
One unexpected commonality between Nigerian men and women is their appreciation for luxury things – clothes, shoes, homes and even premium spirits, particularly luxury whisky. Brands like The Macallan have gained popularity among both genders, symbolising sophistication and success in social circles.

6. Importance of family
Despite ongoing debates about gender roles, both Nigerian men and women place significant importance on family values. They share a common desire to build and nurture strong family units, viewing this as a fundamental aspect of their cultural identity.

7. Ambition and career aspirations
Contrary to traditional stereotypes, both Nigerian men and women exhibit strong ambitions and career aspirations. They share a drive for personal and professional growth, recognising the importance of education and career advancement in today’s competitive world.

While Nigerian men and women may often find themselves at odds on social media platforms, these shared values and interests reveal a common ground that transcends gender divisions. Perhaps recognising these similarities could pave the way for more constructive dialogues and stronger relationships between the sexes in Nigerian society.
