The Rastafari Council of Ghana has called on the Ghana Education Service(GES) to ensure that children of Rastafarians are not discriminated against in school. This follows the refusal by certain school authorities in the Central and Greater Accra Regions to accept Rastafarian children who wear locks to school. Some of the students involved were among the students with the highest grades in their region.
The Communications Director of the Rastafari Council of Ghana, Ras Kofi Collins says the Council has met with the Director of Secondary Education at the GES MrInkoom to discuss the issue. According to Ras Collins, the GES will revert to the Council on the matter. He says the children’s locks are manifestations of their faith as Rastafarians and as much as the constitution of Ghana guarantees freedom of religion and expression, the children must be allowed to wear their locks in class.
The Rastafari Council of Ghana is therefore calling on the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Gender and Children Affairs and CHRAJ to intervene in the matter to ensure that the children’s human rights are not trampled upon.
Rastafarian children who attend public schools in Ghana are usually asked to trim their locks or leave the schools.
