“Recycle Up! Ghana” is a project that aims to increase the awareness of young individuals about the waste problem and motivate them to make a difference in their schools and communities. The main element of the project is a two-week long summer camp that brings together students from various senior high schools. The maiden version of the camp was organised on KNUST campus in Kumasi in 2014. In 2015, the initiative is went a step further and organised two parallel camps in Kumasi and Cape Coast. This year, 2016, there will be three parallel Summer Camps in Cape Coast, Accra and Kumasi. The project is powered by the German NGO “Technik ohne Grenzen e.V” (Technology without Borders, TeoG), together with their Ghanaian Chapters
In Accra, the Recycle Up! Summer Camp is the founding event of the new Accra Regional Group of the mother organization Technology without Borders (TeoG). The 11-days long event is hosted at the University of Ghana in Accra and in order to build a committed team of students and professionals from different fields, the participants of the 2016 Summer Camp are students of UG as well. The participants of the Recycle Up! Summer Camp will also join TeoG Accra and support the future projects in various fields. Before, however, they will present their local solutions to the waste problems in Accra in the “Grand Finale” on the 9th of August, 2pm to 6pm on the at the Anglican in University of Ghana. You – and the general public – is warmly invited to join and watch us.
The Summer Camp in Kumasi takes place from 1st to 11th of August 2016 and brings together 30 Students from 12 different Schools in and around Kumasi. The venue for the camp is the KNUST Campus in Kumasi. The participating schools for the Recycle Up! Ghana Summer camp in Kumasi include Prempeh College, Opoku Ware School, Kumasi Academy, T.I Ahmadiya Senior High School, KNUST Secondary School, Kumasi Secondary Technical school, Yaa Asantewaa Girls school, Anglican Senior high school, Kumasi High school, Armed forces secondary Technical school, Asanteman Senior high school and Osei Kyiritwere Senior High school. 8 of these schools have already participated in previous editions of the summer camp in Kumasi. The Kumasi Grand Finale is on 9th August on KNUST Campus
The Cape Coast Camp takes place from 30th of July to the 9th of August 2016 and brings together 21 Students from 7 different Schools in the Cape Coast Metropolis, aged between 14 and 19, who were garnered from different Senior High Schools. The venue for the camp is the School Hostel, Cape Coast Polytechnic which will allow for maximized training effectiveness and foster an ideal teamwork environment. The participating schools for the Recycle Up! Ghana Summer camp in Cape Coast include the University Practice Senior High School, Academy of Christ Senior High School, Efutu Senior High School, Edinaman Senior High School, Eguafo Senior High School and Cape Coast Technical Senior High School and Cape Coast International School. “Grand Finale” of the Camp is on the 7th of August, 2pm to 6pm on the Campus of Cape Coast Polytechnic. The general public – is warmly invited to join and watch us.
“Technik ohne Grenzen e.V” (TeoG) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization which uses its resources to undertake projects in deprived areas to help better the living conditions of the community. It has its headquarters in Erlangen, Germany and also has Ghanaian Regional Groups in Sunyani, Kumasi and Cape Coast, Ghana. The current Recycle Up! Ghana Summer Camp is the founding event of a new TeoG Regional Group at the University of Ghana in Accra. The English translation is “Technology Without Borders” but the abbreviation “TeoG” has become established internationally.
The content of the camp will be threefold with each step to be perfected in close cooperation with several partner institutions.
In the first part “KNOWLEDGE”, is meant to provide participants with the required technical, but also personal training of becoming a change maker in the pollution and waste management area. The second step is called “EXPERIENCE”. Building on this knowledge, the participants explore communities affected by severe pollution in the second part of the camp. Ultimately, the third phase of the camp, “SOLUTIONS”, is meant to bring participants together in groups and let them develop an idea to solve the identified problem under the guidance of experienced mentors. The Three phases of the camp also include seminars, excursions and workshops.
Each team will present their idea on the day of the Grand Finale. This event will be open for public participation. Leaders of public authorities, environmental experts, radio & TV stations as well as the general public are invited for this “Grand Finale” of the Recycle Up! Summer Camp 2016.
As co-founders of such clubs, the participants of the Recycle Up! Summer Camp 2016 shall act as local environmental ambassadors and provide their colleagues with essential knowledge to work on the environmental challenges and waste management, starting in Senior High Schools in Ghana.
