KSAOMA

“Do you ride lions to school?”, “Do you have wild animals roaming in the streets?” Sadly, these are some of the questions that Africans living abroad are all too aware of. Have you ever thought of how the Western world portrays Africa or what someone who doesn’t know what Africa is all about, really thinks of Africa?

The truth is, most of the time, African stories are twisted to give a negative perception. That’s why three university students from Ghana, Zimbabwe and Nigeria; Derek Baah, Tapiwa Kingsley Ndlovu, and Justice Ogbonna decided to create Kasoma Africa. Kasoma is an online African-focused blogging and publishing platform for anyone to read, write and share their African stories, experiences and opinions. This is a place where those questions can be put to the graveyard and enlighten the world on what Africa is really about.

Imagine if a European who has never been to Africa or does not know anything substantial about Africa, came to Kasoma and learnt about the famous jollof rice (whether it’s from Ghana or Nigeria….who has the better one is debatable) or read about another fellow European’s adventure to the beautiful continent? The good thing, we can stop imagining and start sharing our African stories on Kasoma. It is important for all Africans and non-Africans who have experienced Africa is some form or shape, to use Kasoma as an online journal to read and write about their day-to-day lifestyle. For too long, news agencies have given a negative perspective of Africa or even calling it a ‘Place of promise but no results’. That’s why Kasoma is here to change that.

After a 3-month beta testing phase, Kasoma launched on June 30 and its user base, composed of readers and writers, just like you, is steadily growing. You do not need to be a registered user to read the captivating and diverse content available but you can create an account seamlessly using your social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter and Google +. It also allows for email sign-up. Once you have an account, you can begin to create your stories by clicking on the ‘Write A Story’ option in the home page. Here’s the beauty of using Kasoma: you can write your stories within the platform, meaning that you do not need Microsoft Word to edit your story and you can also save your story if you cannot publish it at that time. Once you are ready to share your African story with the world, you can simply click on ‘Publish’ and it automatically posts on the home page. As easy as that! Kasoma also offers a Profile page for you to view your posts, insert your social media page links and profile picture, add a biography and various functionalities. You just need to see what Kasoma is all about by visiting: www.kasomafrica.com

Exciting developments are lined up in the next few months as Kasoma seeks to grow and its ultimate goal is to have every person that steps on the soil of Africa, tell their African stories every day. Kasoma is also looking to partner with various organizations to increase its user base, diversity its content and spearhead efforts to improve people’s story-telling ability. Now that you know Kasoma, check it out and begin to share your stories.
