Rastafari Council of Ghana on the occasion of the commemoration of the 54thAfrican Liberation Day has called on all African leaders and people to work earnestly to achieve total African liberation from neo colonialism and to enact policies to achieve unification with the African Diaspora i.e. descendants of the victims of the Maafa ( African holocaust/ great catastrophe). The independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of all African people. From this simple truth as He declared, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Founder and First President of independent Ghana set out the foundation on which Ghana will champion an African Unity agenda to organize the first conference of independent African states on April 15th -22nd1958 in Accra.
This Accra conference, resolved to unite independent Africans to protect their own independence, strengthen solidarity with dependent Africans, end all forms and manifestations of racial discrimination and to protect African sovereignty and territorial integrity. It was attended by eight independent states.
Poised to continue this struggle relentlessly, these leaders continued to work together to achieve their set objectives and held the Addis Ababa conference in 1960 from June 14th to June 24th. In May 1963 the pan African conference of independent African states was held and was attended by 32 independent African states who established the Organization of African Unity. African liberation day was hence changed from April 15 to May 25 since 1963 of which may this year marks our 54th anniversary. Ethiopia was then made the permanent headquarters and Emperor Haile Selassie I was made the first president of the OAU. In his acceptance speech His Majesty assured all African people that “the task, on which we have embarked, the making of Africa, will not wait. We must act, to shape and mould the future and leave our imprint on events as they slip past into history.” The efforts of our past pan African leaders is worth commending and continuing so as to enhance Pan Africanism (the aspiration towards and/or fulfillment of various African = Black people, along various dimensions including but not limited to unification geo politically, socio economically, cultural linguistically, militarily, etc. For our self-preservation; rooted in our common history and destiny, based on our common genotype, phenotype and allegiance, intra national and international – Dr. Obadele Kambon)
This will enable the continent rid itself of neo colonialism which has plunged African nations into debt and control by foreign aid. The massive migration of African youths across the Mediterranean who are deceived to believe that life is better outside Africa are killed in their millions and survivors undergo an even worse form of slavery. This situation needs immediate redress by all people of African descent. As we continue to mark UN decade of people of African Descent, it is worth emphasizing to African leaders the need to enact the right of return for descendants of the children of the Maafa/African holocaust/ great catastrophe to deepen African unity and solidarity with all her kith and kin.
The role of the youth in fulfilling all these pan African aspirations is eminent hence there is the need to educate African youths with an African centred educational curricula set out to create and establish the African personality and identity, and to find African solutions to African problems . Within this context we must also set up an industrial development agenda that enables Africa to produce what we consume and consume what we produce forAfrica’s total self-reliance. There is the need to also facilitate intra African trade by removing trade barriers between African nations to boost economic growth. This will enhance African economic independence to prevent the over reliance on Africa’s former enslavers and colonisers. “The blood that was shed and the sufferings that were endured are today Africa’s advocates for freedom and unity. Those men who refused to accept the judgment passed upon them by the colonisers, who held unswervingly through the darkest hours to a vision of an Africa emancipated from political, economic, and spiritual domination, will be remembered and revered wherever Africans meet. Many of them never set foot on this continent. Others were born and died here”, HIM Emperor Haile Selassie I.
On behalf of the members of the Rastafari, council determined to effect African unity, liberty, and self-determination to; secure justice and maintain the integrity of Africa, which is our divine heritage, on this occasion of African Liberation Day, extend deep appreciation for the founding fathers of the Organization of African Union (O.A.U.), now the African Union (A.U). We hereby call on all African leaders and people to play their role in realizing the aspirations of all African people to rid ourselves off the shackles that seek to bind us to perpetual servitude and threaten the goal of a united and liberated Africa.
Long live African Liberation!
Long Live the African Union!!
