Miss New York, Nia Franklin beat 51 other contestants to be crowned the 92nd Miss America on Saturday. The North Carolina native was a prime example of what a lethal combination looks, brains and talent is.
The Music Composition Master’s Degree holder was crowned during the Miss America beauty pageant hosted by Michael Ross and Carrie Ann Inaba.
During the competition, she talked about the role music played in helping her find her identity.
“I grew up at a predominately Caucasian school and there was only five percent minority, and I felt out of place so much because of the color of my skin,” she said. “But growing up, I found my love of arts, and through music that helped me to feel positive about myself and about who I was.”
One of her winning factors was her rendition of a segment from La Boheme a well-known opera.
This year’s pageantry excluded the swimwear competition as organizers wanted to ensure the competition took away all focus from the candidates physical appearance.
Nia Franklin will receive $50,000 scholarship and a year-round job as the new Miss America.
