YouTube megastar and philanthropist Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast, has opened a new surgical center in central Ghana, aimed at providing critical medical care for children rescued from slavery in the country’s fishing industry.
The facility, built in collaboration with the nonprofit Ghana Make a Difference, fills a crucial gap in access to healthcare for vulnerable children in the region. Many of these children were previously enslaved in hazardous fishing operations along Lake Volta, and lacked access to timely or adequate medical care.
“This is one of the most important projects we’ve ever funded,” MrBeast said in a video unveiling the new center. “These kids have survived unimaginable situations, and now they finally have a place to receive the care they need to heal and grow.”

The center was funded by Beast Philanthropy, the charitable wing of MrBeast’s growing media empire. Known for high-stakes giveaways and record-breaking stunts on YouTube, Donaldson has also quietly expanded his philanthropic efforts, from building wells in Africa to distributing millions of meals in the United States.
Ghana Make a Difference, which operates shelters and educational programs for trafficked and abandoned children, said the new surgical center will significantly reduce wait times and increase the quality of care for those most in need.
While the initiative has earned widespread praise online and in Ghana, some critics questioned why MrBeast chose to focus his efforts abroad. In response, the YouTuber emphasized his domestic impact as well.
“If I listed out all the projects we’ve done in America this tweet would be a book,” MrBeast said on X (formerly Twitter), referencing his U.S.-based food drives, homeless outreach, and disaster relief work.
In Ghana, the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, with many locals and officials applauding the move as a major step toward breaking the cycle of exploitation and neglect.
“This is more than just a building,” said one representative from Ghana Make a Difference. “It’s a symbol of hope—and a powerful reminder that people around the world care.”
The surgical center is now fully operational and is expected to treat hundreds of children in its first year.
