Former Black Stars and Chelsea midfielder, Michael Essien is currently facing severe financial difficulties that may result in the loss of his two properties in Ghana.
Legal proceedings initiated by creditors to recover substantial debts have led to a court order for the sale of Essien’s assets. Reports indicate that one of these properties is valued between $20 million and $30 million.
Essien’s financial troubles stem from significant loans obtained from various banks and financial institutions in Ghana, which he has struggled to repay.
The Deputy Sheriff of the High Court (Commercial Division) issued the order for the sale on June 12, 2024, marking a critical turn in his financial predicament.
Essien began his football career at Bastia in France before moving to Olympique Lyonnais. His impressive performances attracted the attention of Chelsea, where he became one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League. His tenure at Chelsea marked the pinnacle of his career, during which he won multiple Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League trophy. Essien also played for other prestigious European clubs, including Real Madrid and AC Milan.
