Barely two years after their relationship became public, Rachel Bakam is setting the records straight on her relationship with John Fashanu.

This is coming days after the former sportsman was arrested for land scam.

Recall that John Fashanu was previously married to Abigail Igwe, the mother of former beauty queen Adaeze Yobo.

In April 2015, Fashanu claimed that Abigail Igwe attacked him with a knife after he caught her in bed with two women.

In June, after he was busted by the police in the UK, the former footballer again accused his estranged wife of calling the police on him. The duo’s separation was bitter and messy, but eventually they got legally separated and he appeared to move on with Rachel Bakam.

The alleged new couple stepped out for events together including an award ceremony in South Africa where Bakam was honoured for her contributions to the media industry. Also, on her Instagram, she shared their photos together, too numerous to count, fueling the conversation that they, indeed, are a couple.

Now, two years later, Rachel is making clarifications on their relationship, insisting they are ‘great friends’, are not married, and that they are pursuing same human rights causes. She did not state if they dated but says they needed to make this clarification following reports that they were married.

Punch also adds that the duo were “conferred with chieftaincy titles from Eze Okwe kingdom in Enugu State, sometime in 2016”, fueling new rumours about them.

But Rachel Bakam says Fashanu is only a friend and brother to her.

“I am blessed to have a great friend like John who has grown to become like a brother, confidante, friend and amazing in business,” she said.

Here’s what she told Punch:

“Fashanu and I are not married. We are great friends and fight for some humanitarian causes together. The media love to refer to John and me as husband and wife but we are not married. We kept quiet and let that perception slide but the truth is that we are just great friends.

“He is amazing in business and a very loyal friend and a professional to the core. He is misunderstood by many but he is an amazing man. I have been very close friends to him for over two years now and I can attest to his goodness and loyalty. He goes the extra mile for his friends. He has got his feet caught unfairly many times because of his goodness. I am blessed to have a great friend like John who has grown to become like a brother, confidante, friend and amazing in business.

“John Fashanu and I decided to clear to air regarding our status. It’s sad that many are insinuating that I decided to clear the air on our relationship due to the fact that John is going through a crisis.

For the records, John is not going through any crisis. The allegations on the land are pure lies, so why should I deny him on that basis? Both of us speak at least five times everyday till now.

“We both agreed to clear the air at this point because my family members were worried that I got married without informing anyone. It’s all over the Internet that I am his wife. It doesn’t mean that in the future, John and I cannot get married if we decide and if it’s God’s will. But for now, this is how our relationship is.

We speak the same voice so if we are saying the same thing, why do people insist it’s otherwise? We are happy. I am very comfortable with identifying with him.”
