It is quite usual recently to hear one musician or the other say that they do either Afropop or Afrobeat especially if the person sings in English or Pidgin using highlife rhythms.

Highlife sensation Quarme Zaggy has gotten furious at those who claim to be doing either Afropop or Afrobeat.

During an interview with Amansan Krakye on Radio Central he said

“The fact that you are singing in English, Pidgin on highlife beat or rhythm does not necessitate the rebranding of the highlife genre to Afropop or Afrobeat”.

” Sometimes we value less what belongs to us as Ghanaians and allow others to adopt it and rebrand it to suit them and then suddenly we hop to copy blindly “.

When quizzed further Quarme Zaggy said a documentary that was done on the etymology of highlife was credited to Nigerians whereas everyone knows highlife originated from Ghana.

” We should be proud to declare everywhere we go around the globe that we do highlife and stop this nonsense”.

Quarme Zaggy produced a song titled hi life which sought to give credence and recognition to all the great highlife legends of the past.
