The maestro of Juju Music, Minister of Enjoyment, the first African to be nominated for Grammy Awards twice – King Sunny Ade is 70 year old today!
King Sunny Ade who’ sound is a fusion of the traditional Yoruba Talking Drum, a guitar with the Juju Music; kicked off his music career with Moses Olaiya’s –Baba Sala– highlife band known as the Federal Rhythm Dandies. King Sunny Ade was the lead guitar player for the band around 1964.
In 1967, he left the Federal Rhythm Dandies to form his own group, The Green Spots. The band changed their name twice first “The African Beats” and then “The Golden Mercury“. Apparently, it happened due to the music business as of that time.
Fast forward …King Sunny Ade’s unique music style, influenced many other successful artists in Nigeria including the popular masked man – Lagbaja.
King Sunny Ade archive of good music goes beyond the knowable, this includes the 1983 released album “Syncro System” that earned him his first Grammy Nomination in the category of folk/ethnic music and the 1998 released album “Odu” which also scored him another Grammy nomination and made him the first African; nominated in twice for a Grammy award.
Today we are not just celebrating one of the most influential musicians of all time, we are also celebrating the pioneer of the modern world music, a multi instrumentalist …We are celebrating the KING of Juju Music – King Sunny Ade.
