HARARE – Jamaican reggae group Morgan Heritage will tour the country’s major tourist attractions during their two-week stay in Zimbabwe. The internationally-acclaimed group, whose gig at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) is set for October 8, will jet into Zimbabwe on September 26. 2 Kings Entertainment — the organisers of Morgan Heritage’s maiden tour of Zimbabwe said the Jamaican stars’ show in the country had been rescheduled due to the cancellation of one of their concerts elsewhere in Africa.
“One of the African countries hosting the group has changed dates so this has affected us as well. The good part is Morgan Heritage has expressed interest in the country and they will be visiting major scenic attractions, including Victoria Falls, Great Zimbabwe and Kariba during their 14-day stay.
“This will be a positive development to us as a country as the group will go and tell a positive story about Zimbabwe. In other words, they will help to push the Zimbabwe brand,” said 2 Kings publicist Dee Nosh. Morgan Heritage was initially billed to hold their maiden concert in Harare at the City Sports Centre on December 31 last year but the event was postponed due to a combination of factors. Morgan Heritage member, Memmalatel “Mr Mojo” Morgan, who came to Zimbabwe late last year to arrange the popular reggae group’s tour of the country, told the Daily News then that the interests by Jamaican reggae acts into Zimbabwe is due to Bob Marley’s historic and iconic concert held at Rufaro Stadium on Independence Day on April 18, 1980. “Zimbabwe means a lot to us as Jamaicans because you embraced one of our biggest ambassadors in Bob Marley when you celebrated your independence. “It’s a concert that has resonated around the world in the reggae circles. People know of Bob Marley performing in Zimbabwe on Independence Day. It was a legendary performance,” he said.
Mr Mojo added that his group was looking forward to performing in Zimbabwe. “For us as reggae artistes, Zimbabwe is always a place we wanted to perform one day in our career. To see the land that Bob Marley performed in. “It was a great concert that we saw and the people were just super energetic, very, very exciting. “So we are looking forward to have that bit of energy with the people of Zimbabwe like the great Robert Nesta Marley did 35 (36) years ago,” he said.
The group, widely regarded as the royal family of reggae, is made up of veteran reggae singer Delroy Morgan’s five children; Peter “Peetah” Morgan, Una Morgan, Roy “Gramps” Morgan, Nakhamyah “Lukes” Morgan and Mr Mojo.
