It was initiated by the United Nations in 1992 to celebrate abilities and successes of all persons. “The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.” The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated annually on December. Each year, the celebration focuses on a different theme.
As part of GEIG’s vision and mission, it advocates and supports people with disabilities for the inclusion of ALL people in the education system and paradigms in Ghana. To honor the day, GEIG has partnered with Lancaster University Ghana and the Department of The Girl Child, Kasoa to host a film screening and panel discussion on disability inclusion and representation in Ghanaian and African films, media, and society.
The film to be screened live is Nubuke; A New Dawn by Bismark Aryee- a young Ghanaian filmmaker and winner of the best student film at the 2015 DOCLA Film Festival. The film depicts the life adventure of a businessman and an artist, who gets diagnosed with leprosy.
