maestros”, fans are assured of mouth-watering square-ups in what’s left of the quarterfinal
round of the competition.
Up first, on Friday evening is Barcelona vs Bayern Munich at Estadio da Luz in Lisbon.
After a bumpy ride, Barcelona secured a 3-1 (4-2 on aggregate) triumph over Napoli last
weekend, with Lionel Messi proving to be the talisman for the Spanish side yet again.
Barca manager, Quique Setién who has been under fire acknowledged that facing Bayern
Munich—the current champions of Germany, and one of the most impressive teams across
Europe since football’s restart—will be tough.
According to Bayern defender, David Alaba, “The anticipation is enormous. Barcelona has a
good team with very good players, but if you look at the last few weeks, we can fly to
Portugal with a lot of confidence.”
One thing is certain: a Barcelona vs Bayern Munich match is the quintessential top-notch
fixture that will see millions of fans around the world on the edge of their seats.
The quarter-final games will wrap up on Saturday evening when runners up of the English
and French leagues, Manchester City and Olympique Lyon lock horns at Estadio Jose
Alvalade in Lisbon.
Star-studded City completed an impressive triumph over La Liga champions, Real Madrid,
winning 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium to take their round of 16 final scores to 4-2 on aggregate.
The Citizens have been in amazing form and look capable of winning the Champions League
for the first time in their history.
One of the team’s key figures, Raheem Sterling expressed his side’s desire to do well and get
the needed result in the competition.
Their opponents, Olympique Lyon, upset Juventus on away goals. The tie ended 2-2 on
aggregate, with the Italian giants winning 2-1 in the match in Turin last Friday but exiting on
the back of Memphis Depay’s controversial penalty for Lyon.
Despite the French club being clear outsiders for the mini-tournament in
Portugal, goalkeeper, Anthony Lopes warned that they should not be underestimated: “…a
lot of people don’t think we’ll go further, but we have the firm belief that we can do it,” he
said.
While City may be favourites, football is not mathematics and upsets are not a rarity even
on the biggest stages.
