The dress broke the previous record, which was also set by another Marily Monroe dress which sold at $4.6M, as the most expensive personal item of clothing after it was sold on Thursday, November 17..

Monroe wore the garment on May 19, 1962, at a Democratic fundraiser and early 45th birthday celebration for JFK and delivered a sizzling performance a year before the 35th President was assassinated.

Sadly, Monroe was found dead of a drug overdose within three months of the performance..
Darren Julien, president of Julien’s Auctions, reports that the custom Jean Louis creation sparkled with 2,500 hand-stitched crystals and was so tight that the blonde bombshell had to be sewn into it at last minute..

Julien said in a statement:

“Tonight was one of the most important moments in our history as a company,”
“We were incredibly privileged to have had the opportunity to offer this amazing dress from the most legendary screen star of all time.”

The dress was presented on a mannequin that matched Monroe’s exact body measurements.
