President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

His appointment was announced in a press release signed by the president’s spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu on March 13, 2025.

According to the statement, the president made the appointment in line with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State. COP Yohuno takes over from COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who has served as IGP since his appointment in 2021.

COP Yohuno, a highly experienced police officer, brings 40 years of service to the position. Throughout his career, he has held various leadership roles within the Ghana Police Service, contributing to crime prevention, public safety, and law enforcement strategies. His appointment signals the government’s commitment to strengthening national security and ensuring effective policing across the country.

Dr. Dampare, the outgoing IGP, was the first to be appointed to the position from the rank of Commissioner of Police, making history as one of the youngest to hold the office. Under his leadership, the Ghana Police Service introduced several reforms, including community policing initiatives, intelligence-driven operations, and efforts to enhance professionalism and public trust in the service. His tenure also saw improvements in technological advancements within the police force, such as digital case tracking systems and modern crime-fighting strategies.

COP Yohuno is expected to build on these reforms and implement measures to tackle emerging security challenges. His appointment comes at a crucial time when public safety and crime prevention remain key national concerns.
