David ‘Davido’ Adeleke has revealed that his handlers wanted him to change his sound after signing an international record deal with Sony Music in 2016.
The singer said he was informed that his music would not sell outside Africa should he fail to make his sound more universally appealing.
Davido said that at the turn of the new year, he begged and fought to make the music his fans have come to expect of him.
In a post on his Instagram page on Thursday, the singer said his new single IF is now the number one song in Africa.
He wrote;
“All last year, they tried to change my sound, saying staying true to my culture wouldn’t work for me outside Africa.
“This year I fought and pleaded for ‘them’ to allow me make the music I know how to make and now see what’s happened.
“Music ain’t got a language. Now I get the biggest song in Africa once again. Thanks to Jah.”
