Actor Brad Pitt has said he is “very saddened” that his wife Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce and has asked for privacy on their children’s behalf after 12 years together.
“I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids,” he told People magazine.
“I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.”
According to Jolie’s lawyer, Robert Offer, in a statement, the decision had been made “for the health of the family”.
He added: “She will not be commenting and asks that the family be given privacy at this time.”
The 41-year-old ‘tomb raider’ actress filed for divorce from Pitt, 52, citing irreconcilable differences on Monday.
The nature of the differences has not been revealed but TMZ reports there was conflict over Pitt’s parenting, with a source saying Jolie was “extremely upset with his methods”.

Pitt and Jolie – nicknamed “Brangelina” by fans – got married in 2014, 10 years after meeting on the set of 2005 film Mr & Mrs Smith.
The couple currently have six children – Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and eight-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.
Jolie seeks custody of all of them with only visitation rights for Pitt. This is even as she does not want spousal support.
