History was made on the 13th of November 2017 as Mattel released a set of Barbie dolls wearing hijab in honor of Ibtihaj Muhammad who became the first American to wear hijab while competing at 2016 Olympic games where she bagged a bronze medal earning her the position of the first Muslim female medalist.
The new hijab-wearing doll is a part of Mattel Sheroes’ collection which creates dolls modeled after inspirational women like Ibtihaj.
The move is a big one for the Muslim community and a nod to the ongoing conversations around diversity and acceptance.
Ibtihaj expressed her happiness and said it was a dream come true for her as she played with Barbies for a long time and even imagined herself in different roles as a kid through playing with dolls.
