The Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) is renowned for delivering breathtaking moments, and its first-ever runway show on Sunday, May 8, 2022, was no exception.

The show, spotlighting some of Nigeria’s talented and rising designers, was held at the Balmoral Hall in Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. It was beyond magic. From star appearances to displays of gorgeous pieces by a new generation of fashion designers, the runway was packed with many wow moments.

Here are five highlights from the show that kept fans buzzing after the event:

Naija stars showed up in edgy, glamorous wears.

Pushing the boundaries of fashion, Nigerian creative and entertainment stars at the AMVCA runway show turned up in breathtaking looks. Media personality and brand influencer Tomike Adeoye, glammed up by award-winning beauty educator Layinka rocked a colour-blocking outfit by Debolavonn.

Fashion consultant Denola Grey stunned in grey as he wore a piece from Kimono’s collection– a luxury menswear brand. Many other Nigerian stars, including renowned TV presenter Uti Nwachukwu, Nigerian Blogger Noble Igwe, Big Brother Naija host Ebuka, reality TV star Antoinette Lecky, and award winning host Nancy Isime also dazzled in unique head-turning styles.

One of the show’s major highlights was the moment eccentric television host Denrele Edun walked the runway, channelling all his sassiness and drama while wearing an extravagant hairstyle. Pop singer Yemi‘Mama Africa’ Alade, matching Denrele’s energy, walked the runway in a gorgeous African ensemble.

 

Dynamic young fashion designers showcased their creative pieces.

The top nine finalists from the ‘Design For The Stars’ Competition showcased their best work on the runway. The collection featuring classic African attires and modern glamorous wear was an amazing sight.

The young creative designers, Amy Aghomi, Azeezat Alawusa, Ezioghene Egbelefiyo, Felix Asuquo, Ikechukwu Nwosu, Obinna Omeruo, Omowunmi Pillot, and Oseluese Okpamen, had been coached by some of the masters of the game.

Their trainers are Da Silva Ajayi of Lanre Da Silva Ajayi, Mai Atafo of ATAFO, and Adebayo Oke-Lawal of Orange Culture.

After the beautiful display of dresses, agbada, and two-pieces, spectators at the show voted for their favourite wears. Thus, Obinna Omeruo, Felix Asuquo, and Sophie Chamberlain emerged winners of the competition.

The pop-musical group who elated many millennials with their love songs gave a grande performance at the AMVCA 8 runway show. They serenaded guests with some of their classic songs, including their group hit single “Olufunmi”. In 2004, Olufunmi was one of the top love songs on all the major Nigerian radio stations.

 

The red carpet was a carnival of fashion statements

There is only one way to show up to a fashion show, and it is to go big and trendy. With guests looking spectacularly gorgeous in varying pops of colours, AMVCA 8 runway was nothing short of a fashion carnival. Attendees confirmed they understood the assignment with their dresses featuring long trails, over-the-top hats, gold fringes, big ruffle sleeves, amongst others.

 

With all the engaging fashion parades, side attractions, and musical performances, the first-ever runway show of the AMVCA was a hit!
