For 14 years, Oscar and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Hanna Polak (The Children of Leningradsky) follows Yula as she grows up in the forbidden territory of Svalka, a landfill site located 13 miles from the Kremlin in Putin’s Russia. It’s a dramatic tale of coming of age and maturing to the point of taking destiny into your own hands; a story of hope, courage, and life, all shot in gripping vérité style.
The festival cut of Something Better To Come has won over 20 international awards, including the Special Jury Award at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), and was nominated by the Producers Guild of America for the top documentary award. ScreenDaily praised it as: “A strikingly visceral and plaintively moving documentary that is arresting right from its first powerful moments…. Packs an emotional punch.”
Something Better To Come screens on Al Jazeera English on 21 December at 1630 GMT / 1830 CAT.
