African actors join Beyonce and others for star-studded remake of ‘Lion King’

Fans of Disney’s 1994 classic animated film, The Lion King have a reason to smile with Director Jon Favreau’s new make of the internationally appreciated film.

The Lion King remake comes with a star-studded cast ranging from everyday faces in the music industry, film, TV and theatre arenas.

The film which features pioneering film-making techniques welcomes back to the big screens some iconic characters that have for long been been treasured by viewers but this time in a totally brand-new fashion.

From the stables of Disney Live Action, the Lion King remake is scheduled to hit U.S theatres on 19th July, 2019.

In the classic movie, Lions govern the African Savannah which brings on board American singer, Actor and Comedian, Donald Glover as prospective King Simba, renowned music star, Beyonce Knowles Carter as Simba’s friend-turned-love interest Nala, and James Earl Jones as Simba’s villainous Uncle Scar and American actress, Alfre Woodard  portrays Simba’s no-nonsense mother, Sarabi. JD McCrary takes up the shoes of Young Simba, a confident cub who can’t wait to be king, and Shahadi Wright Joseph brings tough cub Young Nala to life.

Every kingdom contains a trustworthy advisor or more.  South African actor, playwright and director, John Kani was cast as the wise baboon, Rafiki, and British Comedian and actor, John Oliver was tapped as hornbill zazu, Mufasa’s loyal confidant. When Simba goes into exile, he relies on two newfound friends – Canadian Comedian Seth Rogen lends his comic chops to naïve warthog Pumbaa, and American actor and comedian, Billy Eichner Joins the cast as braggart, meerkat Timon.

While most of the animals in the kingdom respect the king, the hyenas have other plans. German-born Ugandan actress, Florence Kasumba portrays Shenzi, American actor and comedian, Eric André takes up the slot of Azizi, and Keegan-Michael Key plays Kamari.

All in all, this remake of Lion King promises to be a bigger hit than the original animated movie.
