Several of Ghana’s leading spoken word artists brought the craft alive at the TomReik Hotel in Accra, for a night of poetry  dubbed ‘Poetry Slam’.

Organised Pulse Ghana and WorldRemit to celebrate the Ghanaian creative arts in the 60th year of Ghana’s independence, several of the country’s most talented spoken word acts performed brilliant pieces to a large audience that included the past Inspector General of Police, John Kudalor, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Creative Arts and Culture, actress Elaine Attoh, Akosua Hanson of YFM as well as renowned talent manager George Britton.

The powerful oratory of Rhyme Sonny opened the show as he delivered a piece on the powerful place of the son in the African family. The excitement of the crowd was further boosted by guitarist Six Strings, whose hit single “Sobolo” had the audience singing along.

A surprise performance by rap sensation Pure Akan had the audience on their feet while Hondredpercent also delivered a rousing piece on the Africa state of mind.

Radio presenter Apiokor Ashong’s singing and prose on romance and despair was beautifully crafted in accompaniment with Six Strings and was the perfect buildup for the performance of Poetra Asantewa

Poetra’s  evocative take on strong women had several members of the audience on their feet in applause including actor Vincent McCauley who could not help but mount the stage to show his appreciation of her skill.

Poetra Asantewa wowed the fans with spoken word genius. And yeah! Asantewa with one ‘a’

The revelation of the night was definitely Nii Aryee, whose fluency in Ewe, French and Ga was a sight behold as he spoke about the pain of romance.
