The Headies Awards, Africa’s most prestigious music award ceremony is set to hold next month and we can barely wait.
The best part? This year’s edition marks the award’s return to Nigeria after two editions held in the United States.
One major thing we look forward to when it comes to The Headies, or any big event for that matter, are the red carpet looks! This is because Nigerian stars are on a whole different level when it comes to delivering on the red carpet.
Some are major hits while others miss their shots but all of them keep us talking for days on end.
As we look forward the Headies this year, we cannot help but revisit some of the looks from previous seasons that sparked major controversies.

Eniola Badmus in an orange jumpsuit
During the 14th edition of the Headies, Nollywood actress gave us quite a mouthful with her look. The actress showed up wearing an orange jumpsuit alongside matching hair. It did not take long before she started trending on social media with many comparing outfit to that from LAWMA staff.
Bovi with the bloodied Nigerian flag top
One of the hosts of 14th Headies, Comedian Bovi also made headlines not for his hosting skills but for his outfit. The comedian wore a simple white top with the blood stained Nigerian flag that went viral during the #endsars protest last year. Despite what seems like an attempt at remembering the Lekki Tollgate incident, Twitter (now X) users did not hesitate to drag him.
Desmond Eliot in his Agbada
At first glance, you would think there no one can find anything wrong with the Desmond Elliot’s Agbada which he wore to the 14th edition of the Headies. But then, this same outfit was so scandalized that Nigerians made a poll comparing it to trash and the rash ended up having more votes. Well, the whole beef was not exactly with the outfit but Desmond Elliot showing up at the Headies after the aftermath of the End SARS protests saw him condemning Nigerian youths.
At the time, the politician had an outburst in the Lagos State House of Assembly where appeared that he was more affected by angry social media comments than the violence that occurred during the EndSARS protest.
Laycon and his shoes
Laycon also caused qite the stir at the 14th Headies when he decided to perform wearing these shoes pictured below. As expected, social media users had a field day with it that the reality TV star had to come out to explain that it was a decision he took deliberately. According to Laycon, he decided to wear a big shoe so he could take giant steps for others behind him to follow.
Adunni Ade’s outfit
In 2017, Adunni Ade showed up to the Headies in this look that had social media calling her out. Many noted that this was too effortless for the Headies red carpet and that cap was definitely a no no.
Ifu Ennada’s red dress
In 2018, Ifu Ennada decided to attend The Headies wearing a decorated asymmetrical red dress and hose. Her outfit was followed with lots of backlash that she had to come online to address it.
In a post, the actress pointed out that the harsh words really get to her and she would appreciate if they take it easy with their piercing words.
“Chief Priestess, Sango’s Assistant, Confused Idiot” – These are some of the names I’ve been called because of my Headies outfit.
“While we may see things differently, I believe showing kindness even when expressing a distaste for something such as this is an attitude we can all adopt,” she wrote on social media.
