If social media is anything to go by, a lot of women still don’t know exactly how their vaginas work. We don’t blame them though, we know that the lack of sexual education in our society is responsible. The most important thing is that we do our part in educating ourselves (and you) on what you should know about your vagina.

Check out these five facts about your hoo-ha you may not have known:

Your Hymen Is Useless

Yes, you read that right. No, the hymen is not a “purity” organ. What’s more, the hymen could also impede normal development. After an embryo forms, the hymen develops as well – a thin fold of mucous membrane around the vaginal opening. If a hymen is not opened, or partially opened, young women may have regular hormone cycles but they won’t be able to menstruate. It’s fixable with minor surgery though.

Your ‘Bush’ Is There For A Reason

Before you book your next wax appointment or try you coochie at laser hair removal, know that the hair is there for a reason. Yes, your pubes serve as a protective barrier to genital tissues, especially the vagina opening which is very sensitive. In addition to that it also acts as a buffer for friction – shaving can leave microscopic wounds on the skin which increases your chance of getting an infection.

Your Vagina Is Self Cleaning (READ THAT AGAIN)

The lining of the vagina is lined with all kinds of glands that release fluids that are designed (by baba God) to cleanse and lubricate the vagina. Using soap will always interfere with the vagina’s natural state which could upset the body’s pH balance and cause infections. Beyond your outermost labia, where your pubic hair grows, DO NOT use soap. Also, some of you wash your vaginas with vinegar or an antiseptic and unless you’re an armed robber or on a mission to kill your vagina, there is ZERO reason to do that. Be guided.

Orgasms Help With Menstrual Cramps

Oh, yes. According to a recent Glamour Magazine study, 47% of women do not know this fact so if you fall into this group, feel free to engage in period sex and masturbate during your cycle. E no dey kill pesin

All Vaginas Smell Different

So many factors determine what your coochie smells like. Every woman’s vagina smells a little different depending on her diet, the fabric she wears, her level of hygiene and gland secretions.

So, there you have it – a few things to know about what goes on down there. Is there something interesting about the vagina a lot more people should know about? Let us know in the comments!
