The conversation centered around the current state and methods of preserving and passing on peculiar elements of Ghanaian identity, as well as in what ways it can be improved.
Among key personalities present were the Deputy Minister of Tourism Honorable Dzifa Gomashie, (who was also special guest of honour), veteran artist and musician Efo Kofi, chairman of the National Development Planning Commission Dr. Kwesi Botchwey, singer Wiyaala, and CEO of the resort Mr. Hussein Fakhry.
The deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Dzifa Gomashie asked Ghanaians to guard the country’s cultural heritage. She explained that “…the preservation of our cultural heritage is important and its promotion thereof. For as long as we let our appreciation and our desire to be like everybody else around the world, before we think of ourselves then we slow down the way in which we grow.”
In her speech, Hon. Dzifa Gomashie asked all to play active roles in safeguarding our culture and not solely rely on efforts from government. Citing her personal experiences touring various destinations around the world (notably in Hawaii), she pointed out what economic potential for instance, comes with properly packaging tourism experiences.
Efo Kofi, in his delivery, lamented the widespread disregard/ ignorance of indigenous ways, emphasizing the organic quality of our inventions and practices. He also lamented the stark absence of our culture in our educational systems today.
In a concluding submission, Dr. Kwesi Botchwey cautioned that while it is good to be abreast of dynamic global trends, it is sjust as important to not lose our identity in the process.
