In an exclusive interview with Broadway TV, Nollywood veteran Adebayo Salami popularly known as Oga Bello makes it clear that he doesn’t think men and women are equal.

According to him, African women are taught to bow down to their husbands but now they are emulating the western world in thinking they are equals.

He also says one of the many reasons marriages don’t last nowadays is because women will rather go out to eat than stay home and cook for their husbands.

He later adds that even though men and women aren’t equal, the husband shouldn’t take advantage of this by treating his wife as a slave.

He was asked, “Do you believe Men and Women are equal?”

In his words:

“They’re not.. they’re throwing the African culture away. Our forefathers, you cannot claim that you are equal with your husband, it doesn’t matter, it happens out there in the Western world, that’s part of the emulation i’m talking about, which is wrong. African women are taught to bow for her husband, the husband too must respect the wife. There’s respect there, bow, do things for him, cook for him. Unlike there. You’ll go to the restaurant, you’ll eat together. Here, nowadays you will see husband will say ‘Let me take you out for lunch’.. Cook! give [her] good money. If you want to eat fish, eat fish, if you want to eat anything eat good food.. let it be homemade.

“That is the cause of breaking of marriage that is going on now. Some people will get married, spend a lot of money today and the marriage will not last 2 years, some won;t even last for 6 months, because they’re claiming they’re equal especially because you’re [a] graudate, i’m a gradute.. You must bow! That doesn’t mean you take your wife for a slave, No!, there’s must be respect for each other. Sit down and talk together.”

He also spoke on domestic violence. He said;

“That is too bad, i’m not going to support that! My father, my grandfather, i still know them during their lifetime. my father did not raise his hands once for once to beat my mother, and i’ve never done so to my wife as well. It doesn’t matter that you are the boss of the house that you should be beating your wife, No. if you know you are angry over something, it’s provoking you, all you need to do is take your clothes and get out of the house. Everything will calm down. It pains women more.. or you ignore her food. [Don’t eat her food, she’ll almost die]. And if the husband is annoyed too, it’s better you wife you cool down. Later you sit down and talk to yourselves, it will be settled without any third party, without any intruder”
