Usually when it comes to measuring social media influence, I am of the view that a lot has to be taken into consideration, not just the numbers. For instance how people engage with content on social media, who is paying for followers and how much, as well as the demographics of the followers. Check out  the governance Social Media Index-Ghana report released by Penplusbytes recently and find out who is massing up the numbers on social media, on the ‘political’ front.

President John Dramani Mahama is leading the various presidential candidates on social media rankings with 233,834 followers on Twitter, and 880,620 likes on Facebook as at June 8 this year.

In second position in the social media ranking is the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with 94,034 followers on Twitter and 715,761 likes on facebook.

The report provides baseline information about the presence of political parties, political party leaders and key election management bodies on social media in Ghana and their followings as at June 8, 2016.

On the political parties’ front, only four out of the 25 registered political parties have Twitter handles. This is led by the NPP, which dominates on both Facebook and Twitter while the National Democratic Congress follows in second place.

A statement released by Penplusbytes said the report has shown that politicians, political parties and some election management bodies in Ghana have adopted social media as a new method of reaching out to electorates with their message in addition to the traditional media.
