The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has lifted the suspension on four Members of Parliament who were sanctioned following disruptions during the recent vetting of ministerial nominees.

His decision came after an appeal from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, which was backed by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga.

Announcing his ruling in Parliament on Tuesday, Speaker Bagbin emphasized that while discipline was necessary, punitive measures should not be excessive. “As a father, when your son commits an offence, you don’t punish your son to the extent of breaking his leg,” he stated. He then declared, “I will proceed to lift the suspension of the four Members of Parliament. The MPs who were affected can now return to the chamber or join sittings.”

The affected lawmakers—Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor (Minority Chief Whip), Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Majority Chief Whip), Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli, and Jerry Ahmed Shaib—had been suspended after the chaotic scenes that marred the vetting process. However, despite their reinstatement, the Speaker made it clear that the special committee set up to investigate the incident would proceed with its work.

“I promise you, the investigations will continue. The report will be brought to the house. The house will have an opportunity to take a decision. That is the procedure outlined by our rules, by our practice, and by custom and convention of the house,” Speaker Bagbin said.

The committee, led by Ho West MP Emmanuel Bedzrah, has been tasked with identifying those responsible for the disturbances and making recommendations for appropriate actions. The Speaker urged members to allow the investigative process to take its course without unnecessary public commentary.

“Self-regulation is better than external regulation, and so please, this matter should be handled by the special committee at the committee level, and reported to us. I’ve told the leaders to make themselves available to the committee and to state exactly what happened because we want nothing but facts, nothing but the truth, so that we can apply the rules correctly,” he emphasized.

Bagbin further cautioned against premature public discussions of the issue, warning that such statements could lead to misunderstandings. “What you know here is not known by the public. What you do here is also not known by the public. And so when you rush to the public, one word can confuse the whole country, but that word will be understood differently in this house,” he added.

With the suspensions lifted, all eyes are now on the special committee’s findings and the steps Parliament will take to prevent a recurrence of such disturbances in the future.
