The first and last time I saw Al Jarreau was in 2015 when he headlined the Cape Town Jazz Festival, and he was impressive – performing for over and hour. Sadly,  the legendary jazz singer  died early Sunday morning two weeks after being hospitalized due to exhaustion and later cancelling his 2017 tour. He was 76.

Jarreau, who was surrounded by friends and family in the hospital, was a seven-time Grammy winner best known for hits like “We’re in This Love Together,” “Breakin’ Away” and the theme song to the TV show “Moonlighting.”

A statement on his Facebook page disclosed the news: “It is with the deepest of sadness that we inform you Al Jarreau passed away this morning, at about 6:00am LA time. He was in the hospital, and kept comfortable by his wife, son, and a few of his family and friends. A small, private service is planned, for immediate family only. No public service is planned yet this time.”

Jarreau had been touring almost non-stop for 50 years and had earlier announced that he’ll be retiring.
